Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material, and was widely used in the past, even as far back as ancient Egypt.
However, we are now aware of the dangers. The tiny fibres in its composition can lodge in the lungs and can cause cancers. Each year about 3000 people die of asbestos related cancers, which can take up to 50 years to develop.
In 1999 the use of asbestos in manufacture was banned, but removal of the substance in buildings, schools and factories still continues. An estimated 2-4 million tonnes are still in existing buildings.
This is an essential health and safety course for anyone in the building or construction industry that may have to remove asbestos or even for those working in an environment which could contain asbestos, A very important course for maintenance workers, gas fitters, joiners, electricians, heating engineers or plumbers.
